Acanthamoeba Keratitis
- An infection caused by the Acanthamoeba parasite. Primarily occurs in contact lens wearers and recently Advanced Medical Optics' Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution has been linked to increased rates of infection. Primary risk factors for the infection include swimming with lenses in, storing contact lenses in homemade contact solutions, and poor contact lens hygiene. The infection typically is diagnosed by the presence of severe pain and redness. Treatment with multiple antibiotics generally is necessary and hospitalization frequently occurs. Therapy and treatment can last for over a year.
